Compact Tandem Packraft

The MRS Adventure X2 is a high-capacity, shape-shifting packraft designed to switch seamlessly between a spacious solo expedition boat and a fully capable tandem raft. With an immense 331-pound optimal capacity, it comfortably accommodates two adults, or a solo paddler needing massive deck space for a bicycle, expedition gear, or a companion dog.

The optional removable SprayDeck makes getting in and out of the raft quick and easy — it only accommodates one paddler when installed, but it folds away or detaches in seconds when you want to seat a second paddler.

Care & Maintenance

  • Heat Expansion: Air expands rapidly under heat. Never leave a fully inflated packraft sitting on shore in direct sunlight. Always release the valve on the packraft, seats, and backrests when out of the water to prevent pressure blowouts and seam stress.
  • Freshwater Rinse: Always rinse the hull thoroughly with clean freshwater after paddling in saltwater, silty rivers, or sandy environments.
  • Floor Crevice Cleaning: Sand and gravel can get trapped between the inflatable floor and the outer tubes. Deflate the boat slightly and flush these crevices with water to prevent the grit from acting like sandpaper against the TPU.
  • ISS (TiZip) Care: Keep the zipper teeth meticulously clean. Before every trip, clear away sand with a soft brush and apply the included silicone lubricant to the zipper dock to maintain an airtight seal. Always ensure the zipper is fully closed before inflation. See our TiZip maintenance guide for full care instructions.
  • Complete Drying: Never pack a wet raft away for long-term storage. Wipe it down with a towel and let it air dry completely in the shade to prevent mold, mildew, and polyurethane degradation. This is especially critical to prevent the TiZip from leaking.
  • Climate-Controlled Storage: Store the deflated boat loosely rolled in a cool, dry place away from direct heat sources, extreme freezing temperatures, and harsh chemicals.

Performance Tips

  • Cold Water Tempering: Air is highly sensitive to temperature. When transferring an inflated packraft from land into cold water, the internal air will condense and soften the tubes — this is normal, not a leak. Let the boat sit in the water for two minutes, then top off the pressure with a pump until the chambers feel firm again.
  • Weight Distribution: To maximize hull speed and reduce side-to-side "yaw", distribute weight evenly. Heavy gear should be placed forward, as it helps lock the raft into a straight line.
  • Skeg Installation: Always insert the tracking fin before fully inflating the boat. Using a skeg drastically improves forward paddling efficiency and reduces yaw. Choose the small skeg for whitewater maneuverability, or the large skeg for optimal straight-line tracking on open lakes and long river stretches.
  • Seat: To enhance comfort, the seat cushion’s air pressure can be reduced — this lowers the seat height and lets it conform better to the body, also improving backrest support.
  • Coordinate: Coordinate paddle cadence between the two paddlers — tandem touring is a communication exercise as much as a paddling one.

Warranty

  • 3-Year Guarantee: Every MRS packraft includes a 3-year warranty against material and manufacturing defects.
  • Zipper Coverage: ISS (TiZip) zippers are warranted separately for 1 year.
  • US-Based Support: All inspections, claims, and support are handled directly from our California facility for fast, hassle-free service.

Internal Storage System (ISS Models)

Available on Adventure X2 ISS models only.

Instructions for Use

1. Distribute weight evenly between the two storage bags. Because the bags cannot be accessed until the packraft is deflated, only store items that you will not need on the water.

2. Place your gear in the storage bag, fold the top closed, tighten as much as possible, and then insert the buckle at the top opening.

3. Open the TIZIP zipper and slide the storage bag into the packraft tube.

4. Once the storage bag is inside the tube, unfasten the top buckle, pass the strap through the two tie-downs, and re-fasten the buckle.

Tie-down fixings inside the tubes secure the storage bags in place, so they will not slide back and forth as the packraft moves.

FAQ

What is the Adventure X2 best for?

The Adventure X2 is best for recreational flat-water tandem paddling on rivers, lakes, and calm coastal water. With a 414 lb (188 kg) capacity and removable centre seat, it carries two paddlers plus gear or converts to a roomy solo boat.

Can the Adventure X2 be paddled solo?

Yes — remove one of the two seats to convert it to a single-paddler configuration. The cabin is more spacious than a dedicated solo packraft, useful for gear-heavy day trips or accommodating a dog onboard.

Is the Adventure X2 suitable for whitewater?

Mild flat water and gentle moving water only. The 210D hull is general-purpose, not whitewater-grade. For tandem whitewater, see the Viking EVO X2 (dedicated whitewater design with the redesigned high-drainage floor) or the Barracuda R2 Pro Self-bailer (longer, race-pace hull) — MRS publishes the only whitewater self-bailing tandems on the market. For solo whitewater, see the Mini-Shark or Alligator 2S Pro.

How does it compare to the other MRS tandems?

The Surveyor X2 is the ultralight tandem — lighter to carry but with thinner-coated fabric for low-impact use. The Barracuda R2 is the long-waterline touring tandem — faster on flatwater with a sleeker hull. The Fin Whale is the high-capacity family packraft (~772 lb / 350 kg). The Viking EVO X2 is the whitewater self-bailing tandem. The Adventure X2 fills the durable everyday-tandem niche — positioned for recreational use rather than ultralight carry, family-flotilla capacity, or whitewater.

Can I add the removable deck later, and how many paddlers does it seat?

No — the deck must be precisely cut and mounted at the factory, so it cannot be retrofitted onto an open-deck boat after purchase; choose the deck option at order time. When the removable deck is fitted the boat seats one paddler only (in the rear seat). Detach or fold the deck away to seat two. The deck is a versatile choice for occasional cold-weather or splashy conditions — it keeps water out and helps keep you warm — but if you don’t mind getting wet it isn’t essential. There is no tandem (two-person) spraydeck available for the Adventure X2.

What does the ISS (internal storage system) include, and how do I care for it?

ISS models add a TiZip zipper into each tube and ship with two dry bags that load inside the hull and tie down so they won’t shift; because the bags can’t be reached until the boat is deflated, pack only gear you won’t need on the water. The zipper needs to be cleaned and lubricated after every use — sand, salt, and grit shorten its life, so it’s best suited to lake, river, and multi-day touring rather than constant beach launches. In gritty conditions you can simply leave the ISS unused, in which case the boat behaves like a non-ISS model. Non-ISS Adventure X2 boats have no internal storage cavity.

What skeg comes with the Adventure X2, and can I fit a larger one?

A small skeg is included as standard. Many flat-water and open-lake paddlers prefer the larger skeg, which holds a straighter line and improves tracking over long crossings; both share the same stern mount and swap in seconds. Insert the skeg before fully inflating the boat.
